I can’t believe that over two months have passed since my last contribution. It isn’t that there hasn’t been a lot going on in the kitchen, there has. But there has been a lot going on everywhere,..

2 Aussies, 3 Corgis – Are you going to give us a treat or just point that box at us?

These five spent a lot of time in the kitchen with me last month. We were dog sitting my friends corgis, including the little Milo who was 12 weeks old. It was a busy time. Isn’t he a darling? He has a lot of growing to do before he fits into his ears.

There was a lot of cuddling going on outside the kitchen.

I could have used some extra laps

In my kitchen I now have spring flowers, including my favorite sweet peas.

It’s a treat to have kitchen bouquets.

In my kitchen I have been experimenting with a variety of chopped salads using riced cauliflower and broccoli.

I couldn’t find yellow corn at the store, so had to use white. I think a better dish, at least as far as presentation, would have contained yellow corn.

I have found these salads are delicious but also keep well.

In my kitchen I have lettuce from the garden, we have been enjoying lots of fresh salads with a variety of greens.

In my garden I have a new onion keeper. We like thinly sliced red onions in our salads but rarely use a whole one. I hate using a plastic bag to store leftovers as I am trying to eliminate disposable plastic as much as possible. This one works well, goes in the dishwasher, and saves the remainder of an onion until I am ready to use it.

In my kitchen i have perfectly roasted chicken, so much better than those grocery store rotisserie chickens (although they are convenient). I’ve been playing around to get the perfect recipe.

I want one with crisp skin and moist, flavorful meat…one where the dark meat is cooked but the white meat is still juicy. I think I have come up with the perfect recipe and will be posting it.

  1. Love the precious photos of sweet, cuddly, well mannered puppy dogs! Only one lap so by general consensus, it belongs to baby Milo. The flowers are gorgeous!

    • Thank you Abby. Five dogs wouldn’t work unless they really are all really sweet and well mannered. They see each other frequently since we trade dog sitting. And Milo, he is the smartest puppy. Good thing he is so cute. Although it was a lot of work, it was also fun with that pack. Thank you for commenting, it is wonderful to hear from you.

  2. What a riot it must have been having the five dog underfoot in the kitchen and in your lap. I only have to watch out for Chloe dog in the kitchen (which can be a challenge), so five, oh my. We’ve just begun eating rice cauliflower salads and are liking them. I particularly like the little crunch you get. So does your onion keeper stay out of the fridge or in. I’m curious about this thing as we too rarely eat the whole onion.

    • A riot is a excellent description. It’s a good thing that they are all sweet and well behaved. My kitchen is not very large and they were often underfoot. We had to get used to looking down since they are so much smaller than our own dogs. The puppy was the most work since he is so young, but he is very sweet and smart. I really appreciate having someone with whom we can trade dog sitting, the dogs all get along. The onion keeper stays in the fridge, it also contains the onion smell. It does a good job.

  3. How fun to have guests but I bet it gets hectic! That little corgi IS adorable. 12 weeks – I miss that puppy smell! Love the onion keeper! I would love to have one as I always have a partial red onion on hand! I was laughing a bit inside when I saw your chicken; the last time I didn’t truss, my son called it a “slutty” chicken! I have never been able to get that out of my mind. I do think you’re right as you mentioned on your next post that the thighs get done better w/o dryng out the white mean when it’s not tied!

  4. so many gorgeous things (and dogs) in your kitchen Liz. aren’t they sweethearts? love your onion keeper. I have one too, and much to my own surprise, i use it quite often. i’m afraid my chooks (chickens) are always slutty… The flowers are just so pretty too. love sweet peas. such a lovely smell. Big brassica fans here, so the cauli and broccoli salads would go down a treat. thanks so much for joining in IMK. cheers sherry

    • Thank you. Thinly sliced radishes are wonderful in a salad. The onion keeps the onion fresh and the odor away from other things in the fridge.

  5. Oh, all the dogs! They must have been great to cuddle. =) I love your bouquet arrangements, absolutely stunning. We rarely use a whole red onion either, I should definitely look for an onion keeper like that.

    • They are wonderful dogs, so smart! Since they are all ‘herders’ they speak the same body language and get along.
